Zero-based budgeting: a free method that works

A zero-based budget means income minus planned spending, saving and debt payments equals zero. You haven't spent everything. Every euro simply has a job before the month starts.

The free method (pen and paper is fine)

  1. Write your take-home pay for the month. Use net pay, not salary. See our Ireland and UK guides.
  2. List fixed bills: rent or mortgage, utilities, phone, insurance, subscriptions.
  3. Add "sinking funds" for irregular costs: yearly bills like car tax and insurance divided by 12, plus Christmas and birthdays.
  4. Plan variable spending: groceries, fuel, eating out, fun money.
  5. Give the rest a job: emergency fund, extra debt payment, savings.
  6. Check it equals zero. If it's negative, cut a want. If it's positive, assign the leftover.
  7. Track as you go and move money between categories when life happens. Rebalancing is allowed.

Tips that make it stick
